Is everyone connected with the fashion industry outspoken to the point of rudeness?
Andre Leon Tally spoils himself with his bombast because he has important views on racism and how he fought his way to the top of an industry where only the strongest survive.
Yes, it would seem ironic to untrained eyes that wars can be fought in brightly-coloured capes and caftans but Tally is definitely a battler.
Kate Novack's film is an appraisal of Tally's impact in the fashion industry and is yet another biopic connected to Vogue magazine for whom he was an editor at large.
It also touches briefly on his take on the racism which he has managed to overcome in his own very individual style.
My enjoyment of documentaries such as The September Issue, Diana Vreeland, The Eye Has To Travel, The First Monday In May and Gospel According To Andre would even surprise Mrs W.
This is because I am possibly the least stylish person in Britain.
However, I am fascinated by what drives those such as Tally who genuinely seem to think that fashion is as important as life and death (obviously, he has mistaken it for football).
Novack chronicles Tally's incredible life story from his roots in North Carolina, where discipline and poverty were intertwined, to being the darling of the respective New York and Paris fashion scenes.
I was especially impressed that he learned French in his youth because he recognised how important it would be in his chosen career.
He was right. French is a verbal accoutrement to his huge physique and head-turning garb.
Tally's story overlaps with those of former Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland who became his mentor and Anna Wintour who brought him back into the catwalk front row after he had been sidelined.
Tally may be an imposing figure but the film hints at loneliness and insecurity which often shadow workaholics.
He is a complex character who has an eye for beauty which I admire as I sit here in my Puffer Jacket, jeans and Adidas trainers on the way to watch my football team.
It takes all sorts and while Andre Leon Tally and I have very little in common, I am fascinated by his story and life views.

Reasons to watch: A flamboyant take on the fashion industry
Reasons to avoid: Fashion is probably not as important as he thinks it is

Laughs: None

Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7/10

Director quote - Kate Novack: "I have been watching fashion documentaries for 25 years and watching Andre in almost all of them. From Unzipped in 1995 on, he's had these larger-than-life, over-the-top kind of scene-stealing performances but he was always the supporting character."

The big question - Why does the fashion industry create such eccentric characters?
