BBFC advice: Contains moderate threat, scary scenes

It would be enlightening if Mrs W and I were to take a child or two to see films such as The House With A Clock In Its Walls.
Sure, we could hear a few gasps from children at the rear of the auditorium in Nottingham Cineworld screen 4 but what it came to the after-film verdict, we felt that we needed a youngster's complete impression.
To us, Eli Roth's venture into children's movies lacked the punch which we would have associated with Harry Potter or the wow! factor which was the hallmark of Jumanji.
But we were also distracted by Jack Black reprising his School Of Rock character for the umpteenth time.
Black plays Jonathan Barnavelt, who has agreed to take in his nephew (Owen Vaccaro) after the death of his parents.
However, the grieving boy is little prepared for his uncle's home in which paintings come alive and the comfy chair greets people like a dog.
Yep, it turns out that Jonathan is a warlock and his friend (Cate Blanchett), who lives nearby, is a witch.
If this weren't crazy enough - they are trying to track down a clock which is buried inside the walls of the house and could signal the end of the world.
Roth's film is exactly what you would expect of a family fantasy adventure - combining incredible special effects with the realities of life such as bereavement and school bullying.
I suspect that many children will embrace the escapism that it offers and many adults will appreciate the hamming it up of Black, Blanchett and Kyle MacLachlan who is the movie's villain-in-chief.
I wasn't so keen on Black - I think he descends into pantomime and need convicning that he can do anything else other than the combination of wide-eyed shocked or laid back 'who cares?'.
Blanchett has long proved her stripes and I fell much more for her over-the-top testiness.
Meanwhile, Vaccaro will have children cheering as the hero whose 'indomitable' spirit sees him through.
Oh, and there are a few funny moments - the 'baby' being top of the list (you would have to see it to understand the reference)!
But overall it just did not have enough to set it apart from films of a similar ilk.

Reasons to watch: Genuine family action movie
Reasons to avoid: Lacks the spark to lift it above the crowd

Laughs: Three
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 6.5/10

Director quote - Eli Roth: "In my mind, it’s a natural progression. When you see the movie, you’ll see stuff from my other movies — just done in the PG version of it, in a very subversive way."

The big question - Is Jack Black capable of playing a different character?
