"From the time you were very little, you have had people who have smiled you into smiling...
"People who have talked you into talking, sung you into singing, loved you into loving.
"Let's just take some time to think of those extra special people.
"Some of them may be right here, some may be far away, some may even be in heaven.
"No matter where they are, deep down, you know they have always wanted what is best for you.
"They have always cared about you beyond measure and have encouraged you to be true to the best within you."
I had never heard of Fred Rogers, I am a journalist with more than 30 years of cynicism and I don't believe in God - but when I heard these words in the context of Morgan Neville's documentary, tears rolled down my cheeks.
Fred Rogers challenged us to be as good as the person whose unconditional support has helped us most in our lives.
We all know that we would have not achieved anything without being given help. But have we met the standards of those who offered it?
I think most of us would admit... probably not.
Rogers became an American institution thanks to his children's television programmes which were founded on the pillars of love and respect.
He even looked twee by 1960s standards and his shows were low budget but their messages are as valid today as they were when they were made.
And yet, he has been condemned for supporting tolerance and telling children: "There's no person in the whole world like you and I like you just the way you are."
As Neville's film amply demonstrates, Rogers may not have always been in sync with adults but he had a remarkable understanding of the psychology of children
Nowadays we would have suspected his motives but he merely wanted them to feel positive in a world which undermines confidence.
The movie chronicles his life and career with many clips from his shows and contemporary footage alongside interviews from those who knew him best, including his wife and sons.
Rogers was a preacher who used the medium of television to try to spread a message of child protection.
He was antagonised by children's shows which glorified fighting and might have scared them and yet his programmes did tackle difficult subjects, ranging from death to divorce.
Despite being a celebrity, Fred Rogers seemed to have no ego. In fact, for all the myths that people want to create about him, he seems to have been almost exactly the same person off-screen as he was onscreen.
If only he were around today or someone could pick up his baton.
Won't You Be My Neighbor is the portrait of someone who really could change the world or at least mould young minds for the better.
It is a entralling documentary and I highly recommend it.

Director quote - Morgan Neville: "A big source of tension in Fred's life was between him and a world that didn't seem to pay any attention to the good deeds he was preaching about. And that he was also riddled with doubt about the ethicacy (sic) of what he was trying to do. "

The big question - Why do we have to be suspicious of someone who is simply a good person?
