BBFC advice: Contains mild slapstick, very mild bad language

"It's funny but not as good as the Jim Carrey movie."
That is the verdict of Miss W, one of The Grinch's biggest fans, who was desperate to see this new Illumination Studios' version.
When she says 'funny', she means that she was laughing like a hyena pretty much all of the way through Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier's movie.
And when she starts to giggle, she sets Mrs W off. So, Screen Four of Nottingham Cineworld witnessed a right old chortle-fest.
They weren't alone, the children who had been allowed up late on a school night found it even more hilarious.
The story of The Grinch (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) is well known. He is a strange-looking character whose dislike for Christmas is completely out of sync with the citizens of Whoville.
In this movie, they take their devotion to the festive season to epic levels with decorations, singing and festive get-togethers.
The Grinch lives on the edge of town with his faithful dog and along the way they befriend a moose (at least I think it's a moose).
He keeps a wary distance from town and particularly the Yuletide celebrations.
However, the glee of the townsfolk begins to stir him into action to wipe the smiles from their faces.
The story itself is a tad mundane but the spark is engendered by the dog, moose and a little girl (Cameron Seely) who is determined her hard-working mum (Rashida Jones) should have a great Christmas.
Meanwhile, the Grinch seems to be missing that the townsfolk are even full of love towards him.
It all amounts to the backdrop for a seasonal movie which will keep the youngsters happy and looking forward to the big day.

Reasons to watch: Knockabout animated fun.
Reasons to avoid: 'Not as good as the Carrey film."

Laughs: Five for me, more for Miss and Mrs W
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8/10

Director quote - Yarrow Cheney: "I think what we really wanted to do was rather than tell a story based on all of the versions of The Grinch, we really went back to the book as the starting point – so we could be as authentic and purely Dr. Seuss’ original intent and his vision for the story and the characters as possible."

The big question - What type of animal is The Grinch?
