BBFC advice: Contains mild violence, sex references, language

I have to confess that, despite reviewing many Indian films, my knowledge of the history of cinema of the sub-continent is non-existent.
That is one reason why it was such a pleasure to see Nag Ashwin's biopic of Savitri - one of the greatest actresses in Telegu and Tamil movies.
Of course, I cannot comment on its factual accuracy but I will say that there is a keen emphasis on detail with regard to the look and feel of a picture which is vibrant but tainted with sadness.
Keerthy Suresh is award-worthy in the lead role, portraying the initial over-enthusiasm of a young woman who is desperate to make it in the movies.
She continues to enthral as Savitri gets older and her tumultuous film career follows a similar path to her rollercoaster home life.
As Savitri's rise is charted, she exudes the joy of being the centre of attention and sharing her good fortune generously.
Meanwhile, Dulquer Salmaan is almost as impressive as the love of her life, Gemini Ganesan, who took her as a second wife after guiding the actress early in her career.
Sadly, as his own star waned, he hit the bottle and she followed suit.
Thus, Keerthy is also challenged to portray a movie icon in terminal decline and does it with requisite vulnerability.
The story of Savitri is framed within the investigation of a journalist (Samantha Akkineni) into her background as she lays in a coma.
In my opinion, this is an unnecessary distraction to what is a fascinating story, beautifully presented with the highest quality performances.
I am mighty glad I caught up with it before I bring the shutters down on everyfilm in 2018.

Reasons to watch: Enthralling biopic of a great actress
Reasons to avoid: If you aren't interested in the history of Indian cinema

Laughs: None

Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8.5/10

Director quote - Nag Ashwin; "There was a side to Savitri as an actor that drew awe, people calling her Savitri amma; there was also this rockstar side to her."

The big question - Why to so many stars succumb to tragedy?
