It's done great things at the box office, more than quadrupling its outlay, so is Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively's A Simple Favor worth the hype?
Well, yes and no.
Kendrick gives another stand-out performance in an unusually quirky role and Lively is a credible villain-turned-victim.
But there are irritations about the structure of A Simple Favor which prevented me enjoying it as much as I had hoped.
For example, Kendrick's character leaps far too easily from being a goody two-shoes to having several dark sides.
She plays a single mum who befriends Lively's potty-mouthed power-dresser in the school playground and then claims her to be her best friend within a week.
Despite being verbally abused by the heavy drinking anti-mum, she stands up for her and leads the search when she goes missing.
Henry Golding plays the tall gobby one's husband who is dominated by his wife for the apparently sole reason that she is insatiable in bed.
While its characters are pretty much unlovable, Paul Feig's film wins its audience over with is deftly constructed Hitchcockian-style mystery.
After Lively's character goes missing, suspicion falls upon her friend, her husband and spotlight even shines upon the possibility of a fake disappearance.
Therefore, Kendrick goes all Miss Marple in an attempt to find out what has happened.
Well, sort of. This is 2018 and so she seeks the help of her growing YouTube mum channel following who she updates on the case as she shows them how to bake kid-targeted dishes.
Anyway, the intrigue about the disappearance is splendidly crafted and kept me guessing throughout.
And I found A Simple Favor a pleasing enough distraction from many of the very average films I have seen lately.

Reasons to watch: An unusual thriller with plenty of twists and turns
Reasons to avoid: Unappealing characters

Laughs: A couple of chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Director quote - Paul Feig: "I had been wanting to do a Hitchcockian thriller, but it's never been a genre I felt I could write, so I just kind of had to wait until one finally came in, and when it did, I just loved it! "

The big question - Why are Hitchcockian thrillers so rare nowadays?
