Hold on, I thought to myself, how old is Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) meant to be?
It turns out that Adonis was born in June 1986 and his dad, Apollo died in August of 1985. Therefore, he must have been having illicit rumpy-pumpy almost on the day of his ill-fated bout with Ivan Drago.
I wandered off to such thoughts during Steven Caple Jr's movie because I was a tad bored.
Nearly three years ago, I wrote that Creed was so good that the old Rocky music almost prompted me to cheer.
I'm afraid its sequel falls into the same trap that the franchise suffered throughout the 1980s - it just doesn't have anything meaningful to add.
Indeed, it resorts to going back to 1985 and Apollo's fatal defeat to Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren).
Spin the clock forward more than 30 years and the former's son is world champion and now faces a challenge from the offspring (Florian Munteanu) of his nemesis.
History repeats itself as Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), Adonis's long-time trainer tries to talk him out of a fight which he fears he will lose.
Meanwhile, his girlfriend (Tessa Thompson) reveals news which means he should not play fast and loose with his future.
Of course, Creed 2 doesn't end up as a kitchen sink drama so he takes on the fight with the inevitable result.
However, the major thrust of the movie surrounds what happens next.
My problems with Creed 2 are simple. Its makers had forgotten what made its predecessor so appealing.
Revisiting the Rocky story after so long had brought a tingle of nostalgia but Adonis's story was also compelling enough to stand on its own. Both elements woven together were a winner.
Unfortunately, Creed 2 relies only on nostalgia. There are nods to the famous Philadelphia steps, to Rocky's departed love, Adrian, and, of course, his old bouts against Drago and Creed's dad Apollo.
But the new story falls flat and lacks modern-day authenticity.
For example, the combination of Creed, Balboa and Drago would gain such media attention that the protagonists would struggle to find a moment to themselves.
And yet, Rocky himself cuts a lonely figure - in an empty home or his restaurant which struggles for customers (this seems really far-fetched).
Creed 2 disappointed because I loved its predecessor. The Rocky story is left with nowhere to go and I really hope they leave it alone now so the memory doesn't become permanently tarnished.

Reasons to watch: If you are a Rocky devotee
Reasons to avoid: Lost its way after the previous Creed

Director quote - Steven Caple Jr: "Coming off of Creed I, we wanted to keep the essence of the characters alive. So, that’s where [Stallone] really wanted help. Having the voice for Adonis Creed in that world, and making sure we spoke to a younger generation."

The big question - How long will the Rocky saga go on?
