Some films just had to be seen before the year was out and Matthew McConaughey's potential award-winner demanded to be one of them.
But, despite salivating for White Boy Rick, having seen McConaughey interviewed by Graham Norton, Mrs W and I were not as wowed as we expected to be.
Yann Demange's film is a true story, set in a crumbling drug-infested neighbourhood in Detroit where parenting is feckless and relationships tend to be hair-raising and temporary.
Thus, Richie Merritt's Rick Wersche Jr tries the best way he can to fit in and earn some money.
He achieves this by inveigling himself with black gang leaders and selling them illegally customised guns which his dad (McConaughey) has lawfully purchased from arms shows.
However, the more he becomes involved in the underworld, the more Rick finds himself unable to extract himself.
Meanwhile, his father partially encourages his son while failing to control his drug addict daughter (Bel Powley)
Few will watch White Boy Rick and not know the story which was presented by McConaughey in his TV interview.
He told how the real-life Wersche Jr had spent 30 years behind bars and has only just been released and, consequently, there was a certainty to the film's outcome which diluted it.
Nevertheless, it is devastating in its portrayal of the mire of Detroit as the car factories packed up and the grip which drugs have on the poor.
It also contains some top-notch contributions from McConaughey, Merritt and Powley.
But does it have the potency required to make it one of the movies of the year? I couldn't put my figure on exactly what it lacked but I am afraid not.

Reasons to watch: Gritty performances and a reminder of te reality of inner-city America
Reasons to avoid: If you already know the story of Rick Wersche Jr

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 7/10

Director quote - Yann Demange: "For me it was a nightmare because it was a big exercise. I learnt a lot, I made a lot of mistakes. It was a really humbling experience because in many ways I bit off more than I can chew."

The big question - Why has Rick Wersche Jr really spent 30 years in jail?
