BBFC advice: Contains mild threat, rude humour

I found the perfect refuge from Birmingham's German market on a Saturday morning - one of the very small screens at the Odeon cinema on New Street.
This Odeon has certainly not been given the deluxe treatment yet but I was happy enough to share what felt like a cellar with two other single watchers and two young parents and their small children.
Usually, I complain when fellow cinema-goers make a noise but I make an exception for children's movies such as Ralph Breaks The Internet.
This is THEIR film and I am the interloper, so they should ask inquisitive questions and shout out with glee.
To be fair, the toddlers' mum was trying to keep them quiet but their reactions added to the experience of watching Rich Moore and Phil Johnston's film.
I didn't laugh as much as the kids but I certainly saw the merit in Ralph Breaks The Internet.
Based on the Wreck-It Ralph video game, this sees animated character Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) joining his pal, Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) leaving their home in a rundown arcade to explore the internet.
While in this crazy new world, Vanellope begins to yearn to take part in games which are more challenging than her regular race circuit.
Inevitably, however, nothing runs smoothly on Ralph and Vanellope's adventure and their friendship is tested to the full.
I found Moore and Johnston's movie surprisingly engaging thanks to its retro-references to old video games and the camaraderie of the characters.
Ok, Ralph is uber-naive and possibly emotionally stunted but nevertheless very endearing.
However, his idea of friendship is to swamp Vanellope and it is good for children to see that allowing others to grow is a vital part of life.
But let's not get too maudlin. The fact is that the kids want to laugh and they did plenty of times during Ralph Breaks The Internet.

Reasons to watch: Makes the kids laugh
Reasons to avoid: Some adults may find it too juvenile

Laughs: Five for me, more for the kids
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Director quote - Phil Johnston: "I think right now we kept the story pretty-- The core emotional story of the two friends is there. And then the internet feels like a snapshot of the Internet circa 2018."

The big question - How will computer games evolve?
