ONE CUT OF THE DEAD (KAMERA O TOMERU NA!)

96 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong bloody violence, gore

Anyone who has read the everyfilm blog over the past eight years will be aware that zombie movies are rarely my bag.
Therefore, the first half an hour of Shinichiro Ueda's One Cut Of The Dead left me groaning.
Its plot surrounded the irony of the 'real' undead interrupting a zombie movie as it is being filmed in former swimming baths which have a bloody past.
Put simply, it appeared like a badly acted  very stiff, unscary bloodfest and I was struggling to see the point.
And then something totally unexpected happened... the credits rolled.
To add any further description would ruin the potential surprise for anyone, like me, who was unaware that this is, in fact, a very original comedy which has saved up nearly all its gags until its breathless second half.
The story behind the distribution of One Cut Of The Dead would make a film in itself.
It began as a Tokyo art-house movie which had just a six-day run in an 84-seater screen.
Thereafter, it began to receive acclaim at festivals outside of Japan and so returned to Tokyo at just three screens with discounts for audience members in zombie costumes.
By a month later it was showing in 200 Japanese cinemas and is now a worldwide hit.
Takayuki Hamatsu, Mao, Higurashi Harumi Shuhama,Yuzuki Akiyama, Nagaya and Manabu Hosoi take the acting plaudits which are more deserved than I had first assumed.
But it is Ueda's concept and sharpness of script which deserves the most praise. However, you will just have to watch it because I can't give the game away.
Suffice to say that love it or loathe it you won't see anything like the picture in 2019 unless its originality sparks copycats.
It still wasn't entirely to my taste by I completely understand the fuss.

Reasons to watch: A totally original style of movie comedy
Reasons to avoid: Lots and lots of fake blood

Laughs: I didn't laugh but I know many will
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes..bloody and spit-like
Nudity: Prosthetic nakedness
Overall rating: 7/10

Did you know? Up until mid-December, One Cut Of The Dead had won 21 awards.

The final word - Shinichiro Ueda: "I never thought the film would so well received. I don't particularly like zombie movies."
