BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, scene of sexual harassment, implied strong language

How many spoofs really make an impact? Ok, Airplane and Naked Gun were hilarious but thereafter?
I can't think of any which have really struck the mark and plenty which have failed hopelessly.
Apparently, in India, their hit rate is even lower than in the UK which made me wonder why oodles of cash were put into Arjun Patiala.
It didn't take a mathematician to show that its numbers would not work and so it has proved - it has been a resounding flop.
Rohit Jugraj's film stars Diljit Dosanjh as a new police inspector who comes up with novel ways of keeping his district crime-free and getting rid of what Indian people would call 'goons'.
Varun Sharma plays his head constable who is so devoted to him that he backs up even the most hare-brained of schemes.
Meanwhile, Kriti Sanon is a television reporter who is falling for the top cop but is still determined to make sure he works by the rules.
One of Jugraj's comedy techniques is to have the actors play their roles as if they know they are making a movie.
In essence, that is quite disarming but it leads to inevitable continuity errors - some which are clearly deliberate and some not.
Indeed, the film even stops on occasions to point some out and also, in Frankie Howerd style, characters occasionally break off to talk about the movie in which they are appearing.
Sometimes this made me smile but too often the comedy is wide of its target
And that pretty much sums up Arjun Patiala - its basic story is as thin as a razor blade and its gags are inconsistent.
Even the disarming Dosanjh hasn't enough pep to win over audiences or critics.

Reasons to watch: A Diljit Dosanjh entertainer
Reasons to avoid: The comedy is very hit and miss

Laughs: A few chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 4.5/10

Did you know? During the movie Sunny Deol gives out her number to Diljit Dosanjh. The 10-digit-number belongs to Puneet Agarwal in real life and the Delhi resident is suing because he has been receiving lewd calls as a result.

Final word. Rohit Jugraj: "My style is not conventional – it is massy and funny, but I would like to keep it off the beaten track. I would like to subvert the genre while staying in it." Reuters
