Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone could post a portrait of themselves and their work before they die?
Agnès Varda passed away in March but it would be fair to say that she not only had the fullest of lives but she also had the keenest eye on the world during her 90 years.
She lived through the Second World War, was taught at the Sorbonne, lived in America and was part of French cinema's brilliant New Wave.
But she didn't stop there. She produced art, be it photography, installation or film right until the end.
During this documentary, there is no sense that she is aware of leaving her own eulogy but she does give a slight mention of failing health.
Varda By Agnès chronicles her life while giving her own unique view on the world through clips of stage talks she has given in recent years.
She gives deep insights into her work alongside clips of her most famous movies.
Varda gives some wonderful anecdotes and when she name-drops it simply feels like a matter of fact rather than a boast
Firstly she talks about what she describes as her analogue period from 1954 to 2000 when she pushed the boundaries of art, particularly cinema.
During the second section, she focuses on the years 2000 to 2018 and demonstrates how she used digital technology to enhance her own unique world view.
Varda is open and warm in going through a life in which her eyes have been wedged open. Her eye for detail is beyond compare and she sees possibilities and even importance to things which most don't even see.
Varda's skill has always been to see beyond a headline or behind a curtain.
She has left students of visual art with a wonderful legacy and, in this documentary, she has tied up any loose ends.
It will not be for everyone but cinephiles and art fans will immerse themselves happily.

Final word. Agnès Varda: "In 1994, with a retro at the French Cinémathèque, I published a book entitled VARDA BY AGNÈS. 25 years later, the same title is given to my film made of moving images and words, with the same project: give keys about my body of work. I give my own keys, my thoughts, nothing pretentious, just keys."
