There are exceptions to my cinema-going rules, so here's a movie that breaks two, proving that not all spoofs are awful and not all zombie movies are ghastly
Until I had just flicked back over my reviews of Jim Jarmusch's work, I hadn't realised how often he had pleasantly surprised me after offering up an unpromising premise.
From its title to its subject matter, The Dead Don't Die would usually be a cert for a 3/10 verdict.
But the low-key chemistry between Bill Murray and Adam Driver is alluring and an array of stars play cameos which serve to add the sauce to an already tasty offer.
Murray plays a town sheriff who is seeing out his finals days on the force when strange things begin to occur.
Indeed when darkness fails to descend on the day, his partner (Driver) observes with typical wryness: "This isn't going to end well."
He is not wrong. Radio reports state that the earth's rotation has been thrown out of kilter by polar fracking.
It is not clear how this is connected with all local wildlife disappearing or people coming back to life as zombies but, hey, Jarmusch's films are often a quiz in themselves.
The Dead Don't Die is festooned with star cameos, ranging from Steve Buscemi as a red-neck farmer,  Danny Glover as a hardware store owner Tilda Swinton as the Scottish funeral home director.
And there are bit parts for ChloĆ« Sevigny, Tom Waits, Selena Gomez, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop and Caleb Landry Jones.
Indeed, it is the combination of the quality of the cast and Jarmusch's direction which put it on a different plane to most zombie movies.
Yes, there is flesh-eating and yes, many of the undead come to a grisly end second time around but the ennui of such moments is offset by Murray and Driver.
I don't recall seeing them previously in a movie together but their timing and delivery of understated dialogue is a joy.
And that is what makes this probably my highest rated zombie comedy ever.

Reasons to watch: A splendid deadpan spoof
Reasons to avoid: It's still zombies

Laughs: No belly laughs but plenty of smiling
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Did you know? Adam Driver, Steve Buscemi, Bill Murray, ChloĆ« Sevigny and Tilda Swinton have already worked in previous Jim Jarmusch's movies.

Final word. Jim Jarmusch: "I wanted to make something very silly. Something ridiculous, kind of like Coffee & Cigarettes. The characters in those sketches are almost like cartoons. I had an idea that I’d like to make another film like that, and I thought, well, zombies could be interesting." Rolling Stone
