I love a true story which is so wild that if it were pitched as fiction it would be thrown out for being too far-fetched.
Such is the history of Rudy Ray Moore, claimed by many to be the godfather of rap.
Moore was a down-at-heel comedian who refused to accept that he had failed in his ambition to be a star entertainer.
Therefore, he took the stories of the drunk and the homeless and turned them into an act under the name Dolemite.
Eddie Murphy is perfectly cast as Moore - taking him from downtrodden record shop boss to national treasure among America's black community.
Moore is the archetypal man who refuses to take no for an answer.
He didn't see the fact that he couldn't write jokes as a barrier to being able to present stand-up comedy and just found a way around the problem.
Ditto that he couldn't sing but still had the ambition to achieve a place in the Billboard top 100.
And ditto most of all with regard to his desire to make a movie without the money or the wherewithal.
Murphy's over-the-top style lends itself to the flamboyant clothes and willingness to risk everything.
But it also adds the vital strand of impish naivety which meant that his character is seen to avoid the bear traps of the entertainment industry.
Of course, if it were all plain sailing, Dolomite wouldn't be much of a movie so there are plenty of hurdles.
But, by treating obstacles as an opportunity Moore gives us all a life lesson.
Actually, that makes Craig Brewer's picture seem a tad earnest which is certainly is not.
Indeed, it is hip-hopping, beat-bopping full-on as crazy a film as has hit the screens this year.

Reasons to watch: Wild true story and great performance by Murphy
Reasons to avoid: The incessant profanities

Laughs: Three
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 8.5/10

Did you know? Rudy Ray Moore joined the US Army and served in an entertainment unit in Germany where he was nicknamed the Harlem Hillbilly for singing country songs in R & B style.

Final word. Snoop Dogg: “Without Rudy Ray Moore, there would be no Snoop Dogg, and that’s for real."
