DOUBLE DAD (UM PAI NO MEIO DO CAMINHO)
Cert PG
104 mins
BBFC advice: Contains emotionally intense scenes

A pretty young woman brought up by a devil-may-care hippie is desperate to know who her father is and discovers she may have more than one option.
Ring a bell?
Yep, Double Dad is Brazil's version of Mama Mia! without the singing or the laughs - but it is just as far-fetched.
Cris D'Amato's movie is a vehicle from Maisa Silva who has appeared on Brazilian TV shows since she was just three years old.
She plays Vincenza who marks her 18th birthday on a hippy commune where she has always lived with her mum (Laila Zaid).
The two have a wonderful relationship with only one bugbear - that the latter won't reveal the identity of her daughter's father.
So, when her mother goes on on holiday, Vincenza, goes in search of her dad, with only an old photo and an address in Rio De Janeiro as clues.
There she discovers both struggling painter Paco (Eduardo Moscovis) and banker, Giovanne (Marcelo Médici) who could be candidates.
It is after her meeting them that the plot steers into the realm of fantasy.
Suddenly, two men who were previously rudderless have renewed purpose because of the arrival of a complete stranger.
They don't even double-check her bona fides.
Similarly, a community of young people in Rio open their arms to the extent that she virtually takes over within an hour of arriving.
Perhaps Silva really is this engaging in real life. She has a very wide smile and I can only presume that has been key to beguiling people during her already long TV career.
I digress.
The added element of Double Dad is that the girl from the forest is suddenly thrown at the big city and discovers lifts, escalators and beefburgers for the first time.
It is interesting which one makes her sick.
Anyway, Double Dad is a very very light chick flick. It demands no tough analysis and neither is it worth carrying one out.
Its resolutions are way too easy, its relationships too superficial and the grins of its characters are too broad.
But some who are facing the grinding misery of lockdown might find it light relief.

Reasons to watch: If you need a chick flick
Reasons to avoid: Will be far too light for many

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: Off-screen
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 5/10

Did you know?
There are ten communities around Rio de Janeiro which belong to the Global Ecovillage Network. Ecovillages are pioneering alternatives and innovative solutions. They are rural or urban settlements with vibrant social structures, vastly diverse, yet united in their actions towards low-impact, high-quality lifestyles.

The final word. Writer Thalita Rebouças: "Right after a conversation with Edu Moscovis about making a film, a scene came out of him dressed in odalisque for the carnival, and with an 18-year-old daughter arriving in his life. She was born that way. As a joke, I sent him this little scene, then I thought of Maisa and we started writing. ”
