Hong Kong is one of the most remarkable places I have visited.
I was gobsmacked by the skyscrapers standing cheek by jowl with shanty suburbs and the mix of modern and traditional Chinese with a bit of old British.
Therefore, I looked forward to watching a movie from Focus Hong Kong - a new UK film festival dedicated to celebrating the cinema and filmmakers from the territory.
Memories To Choke On, Drinks To Wash Them Down is made up of three brief fictitious films and one short documentary about lives of regular people living in Hong Kong.
I'll have to admit that two of Ming-Kai Leung and Kate Reilly's films grabbed me more than the others.
The first focuses on an elderly immigrant who crossed to Hong from mainland China on a boat many years previously.
She has an Indonesian carer of whom she is fond but keeps repeating the same stories due to the onset of dementia.
There is a gentle relationship which rarely extends beyond the front door of the senior woman's apartment.
It is nice enough but, to my mind, could have been in any city at any time as could the second story about two grown-up brothers discussing the fate of their mum's toy store.
They had grown up with the business but now she is determined to sell it and they both have their quiet views on that and how it affects their futures.
I was much more taken with the tale of the American temporary schoolteacher and her understated romance with a new colleague who specialises in economics.
This is the first time we explore a little of Hong Kong's charm in the shape of its food establishments.
The movie flicks through the school year, placing them in different eateries as it goes along.
The relationship is built very slowly and paints a tender picture of the impression Hong Kong can have on an individual.
And finally, we are brought up to date with a slice of politics and a young person reluctantly battling a district election because she feels obliged to challenge the status quo.
She is ill-equipped for political office but stands against the incumbent who has sat without opposition for 20 years.
It is interesting to see how the young feel so compelled to enter politics when they seem disenfranchised in the west.
Memories To Choke On, Drinks To Wash Them Down is a collection of gentle films which give a taste of Hong Kong.
It appears in the film festival which runs online from February 9 to 15, organised by the team behind the Chinese Visual Festival.

Did you know?
Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with an overall density of some 6,300 people per square kilometre. It is estimated that 26.8% of the population will be aged 65 or more in 2033, up from 12.1% in 2012.

The final word. Kate Reilly: "Ultimately, we thought, let’s dispense with narrative form; let us not try to impose a story on what’s happening in Hong Kong. Let’s give ourselves over to someone who is more representative of who is driving the events. It felt right to end with that." Art Asia Pacific
