FOR THE TIME BEING (TAL DÍA HIZO UN AÑO)
Cert TBA
71 mins
BBFC advice: TBA

I am often frustrated by self-indulgent, arty movies but For The Time Being is on a whole new level.
I spent 71 minutes watching Salka Tiziana's film and I can honestly say I haven't got a scooby-doo what it was all about.
From further reading, I have discovered that the director spent time in the Spanish Sierra Morena mountains.
So, she has rekindled her memories via Larissa (Melanie Straub) and her family who seem to be on holiday there.
Larissa lives by routine, sitting around the house, by the pool and going for walks on the extensive grounds of the property.
They live on land which is remote but they occasionally are accosted by walkers who have taken a wrong turn.
This prompts unfriendly exchanges.
The days are so hot that the characters have little energy to try anything different from the norm.
So, the camera lingers around - looking over uninspiring landscapes or into an unexceptional pool.
Sure the visage of the mountains in the background is pretty but it is nowhere near enough to sustain a home movie let alone a film to be watched by others,
Part of me admires Tiziana for her dedication - after all, she is director, writer, producer and editor of her debut film.
But I believe movies have to tell stories and there simply isn't one here - For The Time Being is merely a collection of images.
As a university project, it might have gained peer approval - for wider consumption it just prompts head-scratching.

Did you know?
Salka Tiziana grew up in a Spanish-German family in Barcelona. She began studying art history and social & cultural anthropology in Berlin and later studied film in Hamburg and Buenos Aires.

The final word. Salka Tiziana: "I can only think of multiple experiences and encounters which led to different starting points for this film. Exploring memory and its different layers of time and perspective was part of it. In our attempt to grasp the remains of something past, memories will constantly slip away, changing their shape, become more and more interwoven with our current states of being. And sometimes they might even respond to what we are still about to encounter."
