BBFC advice: Contains very strong language

What can film-makers do during the height of the pandemic?
They can create the most powerful movie possible with the fewest key ingredients.
Thus, Sam Levinson hired just two actors - Zendaya and John David Washington and gave them an intense twisting dialogue while confining them to one set.
And it works - Malcolm & Marie is a lesson in great writing and acting and what can be done, given the restrictions which we have faced worldwide over the past year.
Washington plays Malcolm, a film director who is on a high after the well-received premiere of his new movie.
The opening scenes of Malcolm & Marie see him lithely dancing around his kitchen as the adulation of the evening soaks in.
He compliments his young partner Marie on looking so beautiful during the evening and she thanks him as she sits on the toilet.
These may seem insignificant moments but they offer clues as to where the rest of Levison's picture will go because it transpires that she has good reason to resent just being seen as Malcolm's bit of fluff.
She keeps her counsel until he probes and probes for the reason for her bad mood and finally, she cracks, giving him his answer with spit and polish.
Levinson has crafted his script with great precision, leading the audience to favour one protagonist and then the other as their arguments ebb and flow.
I especially enjoyed the way in which my understanding of their dynamic changed so many times as new elements of their past are introduced.
Washington and Zendaya are made for the roles of ambitious, arrogant former public schoolboy pitted against wannabe actress who has fought drug addiction.
Indeed, I was left to muse to Mrs W over how clever I found their use of language.
Malcolm & Marie will not be for everyone - the tempestuous rows may well put some people off but there is no doubt that it is an achievement for ingenuity during lockdown and both actors and their director and writer have given it their absolute all.
It also looks great - in stylish black and white.

Did you know?
Sam Levinson and Zendaya were both involved in the HBO show Euphoria, which had stopped production due to the COVID-19 pandemic,

The final word. Sam Levinson: "I was shooting the mac and cheese scene and there was this electricity between them. It was then I realised, Oh, this is lightning in a bottle with these two. And then I got out of the way and made sure I bottled up as much of that lightning as possible for the screen.” Deadline
