BBFC advice: Contains sex references, language, drug misuse

I admit that I find it pretty hard to reconcile with the hero-worship of a drug dealer.
While he did engage many young people with his rap lyrics, Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls, aka, The Notorious B.I.G., made much of his money from peddling crack and the like.
To be fair, director Emmett Malloy doesn't duck the issue during this thorough biopic of the artist who was killed in a shooting when he was just 24.
Twenty-five years have passed but the impact of his music and his murder have scarcely diminished.
Biggie I Got A Story To Tell includes contributions from those nearest to him, including his mother. wife, best friends and key collaborator, P. Diddy, aka Puff Daddy.
I was aware of the violent ending of Wallace but knew little about his life in the tough streets of Brooklyn.
Those interviewed give keen insight into his emergence as a music star, touching on his love of jazz and his love of the written word.
And they speak honestly about those who had a positive and negative impact on the various strands of his life.
However, they do pass over his rivalry with the equally tragic Tupac Shakur with strange haste.
Wallace's story is chronicled from his early days being nurtured with clear guidance from a determined single-parent mother who had emigrated from Jamaica.
Mrs Wallace, as everyone calls here with reverence, was one of those who wanted this film to be made, so is portrayed in a glowing light.
However, despite her concentration on his education, she was away at work all day and the young Christopher was left to his own devices.
Some of those interviewed are sheepish about the drift into the drug culture and regale stories of the parallel development of his rap sound with greater enthusiasm.
He packed much into his life but it was terribly short and met such a violent end that the movie is inevitably tinged with sadness.
How would the likes of Biggie and Tupac have developed if they had lived and what impact would they have had on the music industry?
Sadly, we will never know.
Regardless, this is as definitive a biopic as is possible.

Did you know?
You can actually hear the Notorious B.I.G. receiving oral sex on the album Ready to Die.

The final word. Emmett Malloy: "I’m in Brooklyn and there are murals and BIG everywhere. He is on that level of an artist who now has seeped into the psyche of the world and he’s an icon. Now, Brooklyn is put on the map and BIG will be forever the face of Brooklyn, which is incredible.” The Guardian
