Haven't we passed the point that mental health was the source of comedy?
Not in Spain, apparently, where the changes in the personality of the main character are deemed so funny that they are portrayed on the poster above.
The fact is, however, that Susana Abaitua's character, Carla, suffers from such extreme bi-polar disorder that she is hospitalised.
I know a close friend with a similar diagnosis and has regularly needed medical intervention all 40 years of his adult life.
I have to say his problems have not been funny - in fact, they have been life-threatening - and certainly, haven't been resolved by something as simple as a one-night stand.
Indeed, relationships and marriages have come and gone, victims to his condition.
I did recognise one of his traits in the early scenes of Crazy About Her because he was certainly a party animal when he was younger.
Maybe not quite as out-there as Carla who picks up commitment-phobe journalist Adri (Álvaro Cervantes) and gatecrashes a wedding.
She is on a mission to pack in as much as she can from one night and at its end, she disappears.
However, he can't get her out of his mind, seeks to track her down and discovers that she is an inpatient at a mental health hospital.
This is when Crazy About Her goes completely off-piste as Adri tries to find a way of courting Carla.
Firstly, there are a thousand holes in his attempt to be signed in as a patient and then, when in the hospital, we are greeted by a bag of stereotypes.
So, there are the woman with Tourette's (Aixa Villagrán) who swears at the most inappropriate moments, the fella (Luis Zahera) who struggles with his emotions and the chap who cannot remember beyond a few seconds (Eduardo Antuña).
And yet all of them have an open-minded relationship with the interloper who appears to have nothing wrong with him.
Oh, and they are all behind his bid to lure a reluctant Carla.
The romance between two attractive young people will gain the approval of some movie fans but I would hope that others see beyond the superficial and agree that Dani de la Orden's film is naive in the extreme.
Sadly, severe mental health cases are not simply solved by love.

Reasons to watch: If you are a soppy romantic
Reasons to avoid: Way off the mark in handling mental illness

Did you know?
According to the latest data published, Spain has 4,862 psychiatrists. The ratio is 10.46 per 100,000 inhabitants which is one of the lowest ratios among countries of the European Union.

The final word. Álvaro Cervantes: "The casting directors of Crazy About Her really stepped up and risked casting me in a comedy role but the director, Dani de la Orden, was aware that I could stand on my own in comedy because we’ve known each other for ages." Inside Media
