I can't recall a more intimate and honest portrayal of a loving father-son relationship than the one in Fernando Trueba's Memories Of My Father.

Writer Héctor Abad Faciolince held his dad in incredibly high esteem and detailed the love he showed for his large family in Medellin, Columbia.

But Héctor Abad Gómez's devotion wasn't limited to his wife and children - he was also a man who cared passionately about the rights of everyone in society.

However, his forthright views were not welcome by the drug lords and criminals who took over his city in the 1980s and, tragically, he was gunned down.

 Trueba's storyline moves back to the early 70s when young Héctor (Nicolás Reyes Cano) hangs on to every word of his dad who is a university professor.

At home Gómez (Javier Cámara) is a gentle patriarch who nurtures his son and five daughters carefully, ensuring they have open minds and are good citizens.

But, while he dotes on his boy, he lays down clear unforgettable markers between right and wrong.

Nevertheless, it is fair to say that young Héctor sees his life as idyllic with privileged family background.

However, his father has sewn the early seeds of potential political trouble by speaking out against the church and about the preventable disease affecting the population.

A decade later and the young adult (Juan Pablo Urrego) is a little less awestruck by his dad but has to be pulled out of trouble.

Meanwhile, a key moment has made the older man more reckless in his public politics and his life becomes endangered.

Memories Of My Father offers another dimension to those from within the Medellin drug cartels which have sprung up over the years.

It shows how Columbia was before the advent of drugs and how a country can suddenly become progressively more dangerous.

But it also tells the story of a very clever man who took most joy in imparting his knowledge and improving the lives of those who couldn't help themselves.

Sadly, an intolerant society silenced him.
