BBFC advice: TBA

Glasgow Film Festival has been blessed relief during this latest Covid lockdown and the best of some very good movies has been Riders Of Justice.
This is a wonderfully original and beautifully constructed Scandinavian thriller which has myriad imaginative quirks.
It stars the ever-reliable Mads Mikkelsen as Markus, a soldier who is on a tour abroad when he hears that his wife has been killed in a train accident.
She died because she was in a seat vacated for her by Otto (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), a mathematics expert who appears to be on the autistic spectrum.
He is also a conspiracy theorist who convinces himself that the train wreck was a deliberate act to kill the star witness of a high-profile trial.
Feeding his frenzy for someone to blame is his best friend (Lars Brygmann), a computer hacker who comes up with further evidence.
Their mutual pal (Nicolas Bro) provides the final piece of the jigsaw with face recognition software.
Then off they go to present their findings to the unsmiling Markus, a man with a very violent temper and a "certain set of skills".
Despite constant pressure to go to counselling sessions from his daughter (Andrea Heick Gadeberg) who was with her mum when she was killed, Markus decides on his own type of therapy.
Thus, he joins the three idiosyncratic friends in search of those they have established as guilty.
The brilliance of Anders Thomas Jensen's movie lies in its wonderful script which throws in unexpected tangents and pathos aplenty, constantly surprising from beginning to end.
Of course, the brilliant concept has to be translated to the screen and the cast execute it to perfection.
I really don't want to write more for fear of spoiling what is bound to be one of my movies of 2021.
If you get a chance to see it, please do.

Reasons to watch: Original, clever and brilliantly acted
Reasons to avoid: Its violence

Laughs: Three
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: Bare bum
Overall rating: 9.5/10

Did you know?
Mads Mikkelsen trained as a gymnast in his youth and had dreams of pursuing a career in athletics. He also studied dance at the Balettakademien in Gothenburg and by the mid-eighties, he had begun his career as a professional dancer. It wasn’t until 1996 after more than a decade of working as a dancer that he decided he wanted to become an actor.

The final word. Anders Thomas Jensen: "In real life and in cinema, the best thing is when I don't know if I should laugh or cry. I love that! I love awkward situations, like when you have a funeral and everyone starts laughing. A lot of times, life and movies can be so predictable: you know exactly what people are going to say. I prefer to feel uncomfortable. “Should I laugh? Or should I be embarrassed when I do, because the next scene is so dark?” Cineuropa
