Many people will wonder why the United States has been so vexed by a small island 330 miles off its Florida cost.

Cuba has a population of 11 million people against America's 328 million.

It poses no clear and present danger, particularly since the end of the Cold War when supplies from Russia ceased.

However, its relations with the Caribbean state are still fragile at best.

This was reflected by the case of the Cuban Five who were undercover agents who operated in Florida in the 1990s.

Ollie Aslin and Gary Lennon's documentary about the quintet was part of the Glasgow Film Festival which has been streaming online.

It tells the story of the relationship between Cuba and America since the revolution and failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961.

I was unaware that until Castro and his acolytes emerged, Cuba had been a holiday destination for rich Americans in the 1950s.

However, the wealthy were lining their pockets as the huge majority of Cubans could barely afford to eat.

Change was inevitable, so Cuba turned to communism and the enmity with America has existed ever since.

Certainly, the five men who are featured in this documentary are sincere believers in Castro and his revolution and were willing to leave their families to do what they believed was protecting their country.

Therefore, they sacrificed everything to stage mock defections to America, assume new identities and lead double lives.

They had two main tasks - firstly, to observe any gathering of warplanes preparing themselves for invasion and, secondly, to infiltrate the organisation of exiled Cubans who were trying to unseat Castro.

The leader of those anti-revolutionaries is interviewed at length about his role.

All speak without regret about their roles in what they see were just operations and all are seen in their respective camps as heroes.

This is a head-spinning story, told clearly and precisely by Aslin and Lennon.

But, while it taught us much, Castro's Spies still left us scratching our heads over the US authorities' indignation over those who spy on them while they see it as their right to send their spooks all over the world.
